He will take oath on November 11, a day after incumbent Justice DY Chandrachud demits office on attaining the age of 65.
Justice Khanna was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi high court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006. He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.
With the appointment of the five judges, the total number of judges in the apex court has risen to 32, two short of the full strength.
The Supreme Court is hearing petitions related to discrimination against women at religious places, including the Sabarimala temple. A nine-judge bench is examining the scope of religious freedom and the exclusion of women based on age and menstrual status.
